Creating engaging content for your website may sound like a daunting task, but there's some really easy things you can do to get started.
At Lollipop Rocks, one of the first things we ask our clients is to tell us about their business. This is a great place to start to get some great content for your 'About' website page. And it's a great place for you to start to get some content down about what it is your business does. Think about all the things that have driven you to this point in time and jot down a big list.
Consider why you have set up your business, what you want to achieve, who you want your clients to be, how you intend to secure those clients, what your services or products are, how you want your business to be portrayed, what makes your business better than others?
Once you have a big list of points, you can start assigning those points to pages on your website plan. Website layouts vary drastically from client to client, but most websites we design always include the following:
Homepage:
This needs to have a little bit about what you do, examples of services and products and a clear call to action for what you want the customer to do next.
Products or Services Page:
This might be a shop or a detailed list of the services your business provides. You should also have a think about any promotional messaging you can add on to this page.
About Page:
Although not necessary for all businesses, many customers do like to have a read about the company they are buying their product or service from, so including some background information helps to give your customers an insight into your company and builds up a picture in their minds about who you are.
Contact Page:
We always include a website page which includes all your contact details, so address, email, phone number, so customers can easily find their preferred point of contact with a quick glance. Including a form for customers to fill in with any questions or queries or booking requests is always a great interim step for customers to contact you.
So looking at the 4 pages above, you can start to see which points out of the big list you made can fit into which pages. You might realise you have some points left over which don't fit into any of the above categories, so you might want to think about additional pages within your website design to accommodate those details.
So what's next?
Time to pad it out! Take each of the points on your list and write a couple of sentences or paragraphs (however much you feel you need to say) around each point. Remember you are writing this for your customer, so you want to give them as much information as possible about why they should use your company. You think your business is awesome (and it is!), so make sure your customer knows it is awesome too!
Remember the more content and information you can give your web designer at the start, the stronger the end result will look, and the more successful your website will be.
Great, you've got your website content ready, now what?
